Special Session #7: Integration of the Flexibility Potential of Electric Vehicles into the Energy System

Call For Papers

The electrification of transport is a critical element of the energy transition and a key contributor to the decarbonisation of the energy supply. Many technological, infrastructural and policy challenges will need to be addressed to enable the transition to more electrified transport systems. Electric vehicles (EVs) introduce synergy opportunities with the electricity sector by providing additional storage options in the power system. In order to unlock this additional demand-side flexibility, energy management solutions for smart charging need to be implemented. This could allow, for example, for an optimal temporal electricity withdrawal from the grid to facilitate renewable energy integration and contribute to grid stabilisation. In the future, the electrical energy stored onboard of the vehicles could also be fed back into the electrical network to provide further ancillary services. However, compared to stationary storage solutions, the exploitation of EVs as storage assets is more complex. The continuously varying geographical and temporal characteristics of EV fleets as well as user behaviour, for example in the form of plugging choices, make the quantification of the flexibility potential of EV fleets arduous. The estimation of the flexibility potential of EVs therefore represents a very topical research subject in the field of energy systems analysis. The aim of this special session is to foster discussions between various research groups that are interested in the above-mentioned topics, and to encourage the exchange of ideas to accelerate the innovation process in this topical sector. Researchers are also encouraged to submit original work covering all aspects of the modelling of the integration of EVs with centralised and decentralised electricity generation and storage technologies.

The topics of interest include, but not restricted to:

  • Single vehicle and fleet level charging/discharging modelling
  • Electric vehicle smart charging and optimisation algorithms
  • Estimation of the flexibility potential of electric vehicle fleets
  • Interaction between vehicles, low-carbon power system and energy storage through vehicle-to-X concepts
  • Analysis of ancillary services offered by electric vehicles
  • Validation of modelled data with empirical data for electric vehicles
  • User group specific or sectoral specific load and flexibility pattern evaluations
  • Current and future vehicle charging regulations
  • Evaluation of social implications of the smart use of privately-owned electric vehicle batteries

 

Co-organizer’s Bios

Gabriele Fambri

Bio: Gabriele Fambri received the master degree (with honors) in Energy and Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Torin (POLITO) in 2017. In 2022 he obtained the title of PhD (with honors) at the energy doctorate school of the Politecnico di Torino.
He is currently an Assistant Professor at Politecnico di Torino and his research activities include analysis and optimization of the flexibility enabled by energy conversion and storage technologies, integration of distributed energy resources and powerto-X plants in multi-energy system, optimal integration of multivector distribution systems (heat, gas, and electricity), production of alternative fuels (e-fuel and bio-fuel).

 

Fabia Miorelli

Bio: Fabia Miorelli is a research associate and Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Networked Energy Systems at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Her research focuses on the assessment of the impact of different vehicle and mobility concepts on future energy systems. Before joining the DLR, Fabia worked for one year at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in the Sustainable Urban Energy group, supporting programmatic and strategic work for municipal and regional governments to integrate renewable energies at urban scale. Fabia studied mechanical engineering (B.Sc.) at the Free University of Bolzano, Italy and sustainable energy systems (M.Sc.) jointly at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden and Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal. Research interests: Electric mobility, demand-side management, sector coupling, urban energy system, electricity markets.
